Gen2 Energy Awarded 62 Million Euros under the Innovation Fund Auction Support to Deliver Industrial-Scale Liquefied Hydrogen for the Maritime Market

Åsgårdstrand, 8 May 2026 – Gen2 Energy today announces that its Gen2 Nesbruket project has been selected for support under the European Innovation Fund 2025 Hydrogen Auction, managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).

The award marks a significant step toward scaling liquefied green hydrogen (LH₂) production for the maritime sector and accelerating Europe’s transition to climate-neutral fuels.

The project will establish a green hydrogen production facility at Nesbruket in Mosjøen, Norway, integrating industrial-scale electrolysis and liquefaction. The facility will supply liquefied hydrogen for maritime customers, enabling compliance with FuelEU Maritime and EU decarbonisation targets.

Under the auction framework, the project was selected through a competitive bidding process based on price and technical maturity. The awarded support will contribute to closing the cost gap between green hydrogen and conventional marine fuels.

Unlocking Liquefied Hydrogen at Industrial Scale
The Gen2 Nesbruket facility represents one of the first industrial-scale LH₂ production installations for the maritime market.

Liquefied hydrogen enables high energy density storage and transport, making it suitable for, amongst other users, long-distance maritime operations and offshore supply chains.

“This award confirms that liquefied hydrogen is moving from demonstration to industrial deployment, and EU`s commitment to support hydrogen as a key solution for our future decarbonization initiatives, ”said Lena Halvari, CEO of Gen2 Energy.

“We are not just building a hydrogen plant — we are now in position to take part in building the backbone of a new maritime fuel infrastructure. Europe has the opportunity to lead in zero-emission shipping and broader industry decarbonization. Industrial-scale LH₂ production is a decisive step in that direction.”

Supporting Europe’s Climate and Industrial Policy
The Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest funding programmes for low-carbon technologies. It is financed entirely through revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), where companies purchase emission allowances. The programme is therefore funded by the carbon market and does not draw on national state budgets.

The Gen2 Nesbruket project will contribute to:

  • Deployment of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO)
  • Maritime sector decarbonization
  • Decarbonization in mobility and industry sectors
  • Industrial scaling of hydrogen infrastructure
  • Strengthening of European clean technology value chains

The facility will operate under strict compliance with EU RFNBO rules and sustainability requirements.

Maritime Market Acceleration
The availability of liquefied hydrogen at industrial scale reduces the supply risk for vessel operators and supports early adoption of hydrogen-powered vessels in Northern Europe.
By combining electrolysis, liquefaction and distribution, the project establishes a complete value chain from renewable power to vessel fuel.

About Gen2 Energy
Gen2 Energy is a Norwegian company dedicated to developing, building, owning and operating an integrated value chain for green hydrogen. The company targets to have several large-scale production facilities for production of green hydrogen in Norway as well as a distribution network ensuring to customers safe and reliable delivery. Gen2 Energy also aims to use low/zero emission fuel in its distribution system, taking a holistic view of the environmental footprint of the hydrogen value chain.

About the Innovation Fund
The European Innovation Fund supports the demonstration and deployment of innovative low-carbon technologies across Europe. The Hydrogen Auction mechanism provides operational support to accelerate renewable hydrogen production and market uptake.
