Collaboration among industrial neighbours: Gen2 Energy and Norsk e-Fuel sign agreement

Norsk e-Fuel and Gen2 Energy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) declaring their plan to collaborate in the development of Mosjøen as key location and workplace for the green industry in Norway. The collaboration includes the intent of building an industrial supply chain for green hydrogen, common access to additional land and joint infrastructures for green industrial processes in Mosjoen

As two early movers in the green industrial shift in Mosjøen, Norsk e-Fuel and Gen2 Energy will in the future work together closely. Norsk e-Fuel plans to industrialize the production of synthetic, renewable fuel for the aviation industry. The so-called e-Fuel is based on the electrochemical conversion of water, CO2, and renewable electricity. On the neighboring plot, Gen2 Energy has started the planning for building production facilities for large-scale production and shipping of green hydrogen.

The two companies share many of the opportunities and challenges, the growing market for liquid and gaseous renewable energy carriers holds in store. Not only are both pioneering companies developing new value chains up- and downstream. They also have similar requirements for industrial processes on site since green hydrogen is also an intermediary feedstock for the e-Fuel production. With their common location in Mosjøen, they will take the opportunity to push the region towards a key location for the renewable industry in Norway and to create an attractive work environment for future employees of the companies.

“We are very much looking forward to working more closely with Gen2 Energy in the future. The sustainable use of common infrastructures, buildings and necessary utilities just makes sense to us. In the coming months, we will explore how to increase the synergies of our businesses and production processes.”, says Lars-Bjørn Larsen, CCO of Norsk e-Fuel.

“Working with Norsk e-Fuel to develop an industrial short distance supply chain related to Gen2 Energy’s production of large volumes of hydrogen and to Norsk e-Fuel’s production of synthetic fuel is key in Gen2 Energy’s core business ambitions in Mosjøen. We see lots of opportunities in the collaboration with Norsk e-Fuel while strengthening the position of Mosjøen as a vital location and workplace for green industry in the region.”, says Jonas Meyer, CEO in Gen2 Energy.

Gen2 Energy and Norsk e-Fuel have also signed a tri-lateral option agreement with Vefsn Municipality for purchase of additional land close to both parties’ production sites. The plan is to locate administration offices, parking, workshops, and laboratory in this area, located just north of the new Pålgården transformer station, which Linea plan to build to supply the new industrial area with renewable power.

“The developments are very pleasant and show that we are an attractive municipality for new establishments.”, says Berit Hundåla, mayor of Vefsn municipality, ”It also confirms what I have stated previously that both companies are serious and have big plans for Vefsn municipality.”

Norsk e-Fuel in brief

Norsk e-Fuel AS is a leading industrial consortium that has joined forces to create a sustainable fuel that will realize a climate-neutral transport sector, especially in industries that are difficult to electrify – such as the aviation industry. The company’s first production facility will be located in Mosjøen, northern Norway, and will produce renewable fuel from CO2 and water using 100% Norwegian renewable electricity.

Norsk e-Fuel was founded in 2019 as a project development company. The joint venture consists of five partners: Sunfire GmbH, the world’s leading PtL technology provider; Climeworks AG, the pioneer in CO2 air capture technology; Paul Wurth SA (SMS group), a leading international EPC company for steelmakers; the Norwegian Clean-Tech investment company Valinor, the parent company of Norsk Vind; and lux-Airport, aerodrome operator of Luxembourg Airport.
